X-ray Grating-based Phase Contrast CT for Non-Destructive Testing and Evaluation

چکیده
X-ray Phase Contrast Imaging (XPCI) techniques have been receiving increasing attention in the last decade due to the contrast improvement that they offer for weakly absorbing materials such as polymers or biological soft tissues. However, their use in industrial non-destructive testing and evaluation has been up to now marginal, on one hand due to the technical limitations of the initial experimental prototypes and on the other hand, because the applications that are the most adapted to this new contrast mechanism were mostly unknown. In this paper, we present recent developments made on X-ray Phase Contrast Imaging based on the Talbot-Lau interferometer that allows for high contrast measurements of weakly absorbing objects. The potential for the industrial inspection of fiber reinforced materials (for example impact damage, fiber debonding or porosity) is illustrated with experimental results.

Comparison of phase contrast X-ray computed tomography methods for non-destructive testing of materials
Currently the basis for standard X-ray computed tomography (CT) is absorption. A volumetric map of a specimen in three dimensions is generated from a set of absorption radiographs. The contrast of details strongly depends on a difference in absorption coefficient between the detail and the environment. However, when the absorption difference is low, sufficient contrast for a good quality X-ray ...
متن کاملAdvanced X-Ray Tomographic Methods for Quantitative Characterisation of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers
In recent years, a strongly growing demand of aeronautic industry for light weight materials like carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) motivated by economic and environmental issues is observed. The main interest of using CFRP composites is based on weight reduction, and on the high fatigue resistance capabilities. The next generation aircrafts, as the Airbus A350 XWB aim to be made of more ...
متن کاملHard-X-ray dark-field imaging using a grating interferometer.
Imaging with visible light today uses numerous contrast mechanisms, including bright- and dark-field contrast, phase-contrast schemes and confocal and fluorescence-based methods. X-ray imaging, on the other hand, has only recently seen the development of an analogous variety of contrast modalities. Although X-ray phase-contrast imaging could successfully be implemented at a relatively early sta...
متن کاملCase Studies in the Use of Computed Tomography for Non-Destructive Testing, Failure Analysis and Performance Evaluation
X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) allows visualisation of the physical structures in the interior of an object without physically opening or cutting it. After an introductory review of X-ray computed tomography and its applicability to industrial non-destructive testing and evaluation this paper presents details of a range of case studies where this technology has enabled non-destructive testing, ...
متن کاملImaging Liver Lesions Using Grating-Based Phase-Contrast Computed Tomography with Bi-Lateral Filter Post-Processing
X-ray phase-contrast imaging shows improved soft-tissue contrast compared to standard absorption-based X-ray imaging. Especially the grating-based method seems to be one promising candidate for clinical implementation due to its extendibility to standard laboratory X-ray sources. Therefore the purpose of our study was to evaluate the potential of grating-based phase-contrast computed tomography...
